A “Sweet” Excavation Project at Greendale Elementary

Fourth grade students at Greendale Elementary School learned about Virginia’s natural resources.  During a “Cookie Mining” lab activity students mined chocolate chips out of soft and hard cookies and in the process were able to collect both qualitative and quantitative data. The students also reviewed perimeter and area after tracing their cookie onto grid paper and managed to eat some chocolate chip cookies too. By the end of the activity the fourth grade students were able to summarize the environmental impact of obtaining and using fossil fuels and created solutions for reducing the use of fossil fuels.
