The Rainbow Connection

As a culminating activity in their unit on light, fifth grade students at Greendale Elementary were given the opportunity to paint the visible spectrum in the shape of the rainbow.  They were given water colors to use, but there was a catch.  They could only use a certain number of colors in making their rainbow.  After much trial and error, students finally figured out how to achieve their goal.  After their paintings were complete, they went outside with prisms and lenses to see if they could get sunlight to bend and make the spectrum “visible.”  The students seemed to enjoy this hands on way of seeing things in a whole new light!
