On September 6th, third graders at Greendale Elementary School visited the annual Conservation Camp at Sugar Hollow Park. The focus of the camp was to learn about conservation of natural resources, wildlife and water management. Third graders spent the day rotating amongst stations. Each station involved hands-on activities such as the touching of animal hides, learning about the regions of Virginia by placing manipulatives on a map and discovering a beaver’s physical and behavioral adaptations by dressing up a volunteer student as a beaver. Greendale students had a picnic at the park and were able to enjoy a short time playing on the playground. The day was adventurous, and students left with a greater knowledge of their role in conservation.

On Friday, August 30th, the GES fourth graders conducted their first science experiment of the year. The students wrote a lab report and wrote a hypothesis statement about what they thought would happen when they combined vinegar, warm water, and baking soda in a sealed zipper baggie. Once the lab reports were completed, the three science classes went outside to test whether or not their hypotheses were correct or incorrect. The results were EXPLOSIVE and the fourth grade scientists had a blast!

Dunk Your Superintendent! If you don’t like the idea of a new cell phone policy or think school starts too early in August, now is your chance to take out your start of school frustrations, and dunk Dr. Perrigan! He’ll be in the dunk tank at Dairy Queen in Abingdon (Exit 19 location) on Saturday, with the fun beginning at 4:00 p.m. Proceeds raised from the event go towards St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. WCPS students and staff have loved participating in fundraisers for St. Jude and are thrilled to be able to give back.
